Jaffna Fort is a massive, star-shaped defensive bastion built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch. It is one of the most imposing colonial ruins in Sri Lanka, overlooking the calm waters of the Jaffna lagoon. The fort contains fascinating ruins of old churches, barracks, and massive ramparts that you can walk upon for expansive views of the peninsula. It is easy to explore on foot. Visit from January to September. It is a perfect site for history buffs and photographers interested in military architecture and northern Sri Lankan heritage.
