The iconic ancient rock fortress of Sri Lanka.
Ancient Rock Fortress, Frescoes, Mirror Wall
Often referred to as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World', Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's most iconic historical site. Rising 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, this massive column of rock was transformed into a royal citadel by King Kasyapa in the 5th century. Visitors can climb the intricate network of staircases, passing through the colossal Lion Paws, to reach the summit where the ruins of the ancient palace remain. Halfway up the rock, a sheltered gallery features the world-famous frescoes of the 'Sigiriya Maidens'. The base of the rock is surrounded by beautifully landscaped water gardens, boulder gardens, and ancient moats that highlight the advanced hydraulic engineering of ancient Sri Lanka.
