Badulla District
A laid-back mountain town famous for hiking and scenery.
Ella Rock, Ravana Falls, Tea Plantations
Ella is a small, vibrant mountain town in the Badulla District that has become the premier hill-country destination in Sri Lanka. Situated at an elevation of 1,000 meters, it is surrounded by a dramatic landscape of deep gaps, soaring peaks, and lush tea plantations that cling to the steep mountainsides. For decades, it was a quiet agricultural hub, but today it is the favorite base for travelers looking to hike, explore waterfalls, and experience the famous "slow" mountain life of Sri Lanka.
The town itself is a charming collection of cafes, boutique guesthouses, and restaurants, but the real magic lies in the surrounding nature. Within a few kilometers of the town center, you have world-class hiking (Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak), major waterfalls (Ravana Falls), and colonial engineering marvels (Nine Arch Bridge).
You need to travel to Ella because it offers the best hiking in the country. If you want a break from the heat of the cultural triangle and the bustle of the cities, Ella is the ultimate retreat. The air is always cool, the views are constantly changing with the passing mist, and the town itself has an incredibly welcoming, bohemian atmosphere.
Furthermore, the journey to Ella is as important as the destination. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is widely cited as the most beautiful train trip in the world, passing through misty mountains, waterfalls, and endless tea estates.
The best time to visit is from January to May. During these months, the weather is stable, allowing for clear views from the peaks and pleasant hiking conditions. While Ella is beautiful year-round, the misty, rainy season (October to December) can make hiking trails very slippery and obscure the famous views.
